Helping You Let Go of the Past
Traumatic experiences often continue to cause immense pain, stress, and suffering in people’s lives, even months or years after they took place. If you experienced traumatic event(s) in your life, you might be experiencing anger, anxiety, sadness, guilt, shame, and/or a lot of irritability. You might be experiencing unwanted, sometimes vivid, memories, images, or thoughts, about what happened. Perhaps you are experiencing nightmares or flashbacks, or having physical reactions such as being extra tired, find yourself sweating, having trouble eating, or having trouble falling asleep. Sometimes these reactions are triggered by specific reminders, a sound, a smell, seeing something similar on TV, or sometimes they seem to come completely out of the blue.
For a long time, it was thought that trauma or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was only associated with war veterans and sexual assault survivors. We now know that while experiencing combat or sexual violence can still be major causes of PTSD, trauma can include many other types of experiences as well. Some of these experiences may include being physically harmed or being threatened with physical harm or death, experiencing sexual violence, witnessing a serious injury or death, learning about the details of a death or serious injury, experiencing a natural disaster, and more. Additionally, developing PTSD symptoms can be caused by:
- Direct Exposure to a trauma
- Witnessing a trauma happen, even to somebody else
- Learning that someone close to you was exposed to a trauma
- Exposure to details of a trauma, which can often be experienced by paramedics, EMTs, first responders, police officers, firefighters, etc.
Help is Available, and Treatment for Trauma or PTSD Really Works
Many scientific studies show that trauma can quite literally change the way our brain reacts to everyday stimulus. Because of this, often times people who have experienced trauma turn to intoxicating anti-anxiety drugs, painkillers, alcohol, and adamant avoidance of anything that may trigger their overwhelming symptoms. Tragically, it is not uncommon for people to develop secondary mental health problems or substance use problems, as a result of trying to self-medicate their traumatic past.
The good news is that evidence-based Psychotherapy techniques, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Mindfulness, and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PET) have a proven track record of helping people naturally “re-wire” their brains and get to a point where they are not enslaved to the harrowing symptoms that have been weighing on them day in and day out.
